Always Use Open Graph with Jetpack

Description

Jetpack automatically disables its Open Graph tags when there’s a known plugin that already adds Open Graph tags, which is good. Sometimes, though, you might want to use Jetpack’s version instead. Even if you disable the tags in the conflicting plugin, Jetpack won’t add Open Graph tags without being told to do so.

This is great for when you want to use the awesome WP SEO by Yoast plugin or others like All-in-One SEO, but, for whatever reason, would like to use Jetpack’s OG tags instead.

There’s a second reason to reach for this one: Jetpack only outputs its Open Graph tags when Jetpack Social (formerly Sharing) is active, since that’s the feature the tags were originally built for. If you aren’t publicizing posts anywhere and have left Jetpack Social turned off, Jetpack skips the tags entirely. This plugin turns them back on, so you get Jetpack’s Open Graph and Twitter Card markup without enabling any of the sharing features.

Installation

  1. Install the plugin within WordPress via the Plugins->Add New page.
  2. Activate Plugin
  3. Profit. No options to set, nothing else to do.

FAQ

Why would I want to use this?

Jetpack’s implementation of Open Graph and Twitter Card tags is the same as what’s used on WordPress.com. There’s a team of folks who are keeping watch on Facebook and Twitter changes, then improving the code. WP SEO and other plugins do a great job with SEO, so this plugin helps everyone play together nicer.

I don’t use Jetpack Social. Will I still get Open Graph tags?

Yes, and that’s one of the better reasons to install this. Jetpack ties its Open Graph output to Jetpack Social (formerly Sharing) being active, so with that feature off, you get no tags at all. This plugin adds them either way, which keeps your link previews working in Facebook, Slack, iMessage, and anywhere else that reads Open Graph, without you having to connect a single social account.

I deactivated my SEO plugin and now I have no Open Graph tags. What happened?

While it’s active, an SEO plugin like The SEO Framework or Yoast tells Jetpack to stand down via a filter. Deactivating that plugin removes the filter and leaves nothing behind in the database, so that isn’t the problem. Check whether Jetpack Social is enabled. If it isn’t, Jetpack was never going to output the tags on its own, and this plugin will sort it out.

It works great as expected. Tested with: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing and https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validator

I love it. I needed to do some things that Yoast SEO was not able to do. It works as it should and doesn’t give me any problems.
